Paramhansa Yoganananda was the first great yoga master of India to live in the west for an extended period of time. From his arrival in Boston in 1920 to his passing in 1952, he enthralled thousands from coast to coast with his powerful, dynamic personality and encouragement to learn the timeless wisdom of yoga. Yoga was virtually unknown in America at the time, yet Americans filled the largest auditoriums in the country to hear him speak. He taught yoga as a universal practice for people of all creeds to deepen their spiritual lives. His Autobiography of a Yogi has been in print for over sixty years and has been named one of the top one hundred spiritual books of the century.
In our monthly classes, we cover the philosophy and techniques taught by this great yoga master. Learn the basics and benefits of a meditation practice, tips to deepen your experience and how to develop a consistent practice. Classes include instruction, discussion, group meditation practice, time for questions and socializing. Some classes will also feature videos and/or book discussion.
Class topics include discussion of Yogananda's teachings on concentration techniques, energizing exercises, affirmations, visualization, effective prayer, chanting, magnetism, Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga, and more.
Next Class: August 28, 2008
Yoga is a vast, vast topic which is easy to get lost in. So many styles, so many practices. How to orient oneself? In our July and August classes, we go to the source books of the yoga tradition, the Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, to discuss the various types of yoga and the parts (limbs) of yoga. With this understanding, each person may gain insights into how to deepen their own meditation practice.
